The Colors Within is a heartfelt coming-of-age story about Totsuko who can see the colours of people’s hearts. She finds herself drawn to Kimi who form a band with Rui a boy ionate for music. The three get closer together all thanks to the music helping learn about who they are and what their true ‘colour’ is.

Our resident Anime writer Robert Ewing watched the film at last month’s BFI London Film Festival. He loved it and described the film “ It is a genre-defining film that cements her status as one of the greatest storytellers—not just in anime, but in film as a whole“.

Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colours’ of others. Colours of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a colour she treasures as her favourite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful colour of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practise at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colours’?

The Colors Within is releasing in UK and Irish cinemas in Japanese with English subtitles, and an English-language dub, from Friday 31st January. If you live Stateside, GK Kids will be releasing the film on 24th January.
