Watch Fantastic Cannes bound John Hillcoat’s LAWLESS Trailer

lawless2

John Hillcoat’s The Road which gave myself the opinion that when the film is adapted from a book see the film before you read the book and I did that enjoying the film more as well as book. It just seems like yesterday not realising that 3 years on he hasn’t done a feature film since until now, LAWLESS. Formerly known as The Wettest County In The World (that’s Greater Manchester, fact.) to Wettest County  to Lawless, tonight we have the first trailer!

Apart from the name changes, Lawless has been a victim of the release delays a few days ago was announced part of Competition strand at next month’s Cannes Film Festival, which should help the film get a few more distributors (hopefully a UK distributor too). It was also getting a tad boring that only a few images had been release but nothing more but as you see thanks to Weinstein Company via Yahoo! We have a trailer!

Lawless is based on the Novel The Wettest County In The World based on a true story Prohibition-era tale about the Bondurant brothers (played by Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke) ,a bootlegging gang in USA’s South  creating a dynasty that even the local police want in on the game. It’s all about power, wealth, greed, abuse of power but most off all the book this film is based on was written by Matt Bondurant who just happens to be the brother’s grandson, great nephew!

This looks fantastic which is backed up by a brilliant cast which includes Gary Oldman wielding a Tommy Gun!!! ing him is Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska , Noah Taylor, Dene Dehaan (Chronicle). The film gives our first look at Shia Lebeouf in film that doesn’t include have CGI talking robots or dumb blonde girlfriends around him, first glance he could be the weak spot of the cast with Tom Hardy looking like he’ll pull off another fine performance to take his stature to another level. This film has a strong Character focus and Lawless has that strong cast to make the focus really shine and if you loved the depth as well as visual styles of The Road, Proposition Lawless has Hillcoats trademarl all over it.

No word on exactly when this one will arrive in UK&Ireland, the film is due to make its world premier at Cannes with American cinephiles catching the film on August 31st.

*UPDATE April 25th – Momentum Pictures have been in touch to inform us they will be releasing Lawless in UK&Ireland also the same day as USA, below the trailer is the official UK Synopsis for the film*

Set in the 1920s prohibition-era America, LAWLESS is the true story of the Bondurant brothers. Brazen and fearless, these young rural bootleggers became legendary criminals. The youngest brother, Jack (LaBeouf) is ambitious and impulsive, the middle brother, Howard (Jason Clarke), is loyal but reckless and eldest brother, Forrest (Hardy), leads the family with a silent determination. As the Bondurants’ illicit business and legend grows, so too looms the danger of bigger fish, and it’s not long before the brothers must face the consequences.

Mia Wasikowska (JANE EYRE), Jessica Chastain (THE HELP), Guy Pearce (THE KING’S SPEECH), Noah Taylor (SUBMARINE), Jason Clarke (PUBLIC ENEMIES) and Dane DeHaan (CHRONICLE) round out the exciting cast.

Based on the novel by Matt Bondurant, LAWLESS has been adapted for the screen by Nick Cave, who also composed the original score.LAWLESS will receive its world premiere playing in competition at the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

Matt Bondurant’s original novel, LAWLESS, based on the true exploits of his grandfather and granduncles, will be published for the first time in the UK and Ireland on 16th August by Canongate Books.
