Venom Third Week On Top On The Official Film Chart

Venom boasts a third week at the top of the Official Film Chart with its biggest week of sales yet, leading four brand new entries in the Top 10.

The Tom Hardy antihero adventure more than doubles last week’s performance following its release on disc – with physical formats counting towards 87% of its total this week. Not bad for a film that was critically panned by most critics, showing People Power does work.

Johnny English Strikes Again crashes in at Number 2 on s alone (available on disc on Feb 18), this week’s highest new entry. Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling spy returns for the third instalment of the series when a cyber-attack leaks the identity of MI5’s active undercover agents, forcing English and his fellow ex-agents out of retirement; not so tech-savvy, Johnny must overcome the challenges of modern technology to successfully undertake his mission to find the mastermind behind the hack.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls ticks down one place to Number 3, and First Man lands on brand new territory, debuting at Number 4 on s only. The Predator creeps down two spots to Number 5, ahead of The Greatest Showman at 6 and King Of Thieves, which climbs one rung to Number 7; Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again flaunts its 13th week on the Film Chart at Number 8.

Closing out the top ten are two more new entries: Bad Times At The El Royale at Number 10.

A notable new addition to the Top 20, Fifty Shades Freed moves up nine notches to Number 15 as Valentine’s Day approaches.

Its Valentine’s Day this week and Official Charts have revealed the best-selling Rom-Coms on Disc of all time with Love, Actually leading the way. The multi-storylined, British romantic comedy features an all-star ensemble cast who experience love, loss and attraction. Hugh Grant plays the Prime Minister and is something of a Rom-Com staple, featuring in six of the Top 20 best-sellers on DVD and Blu-ray.

In second place is the long-awaited 2008 big screen adaptation of hit TV show Sex and the City, starring Sarah-Jessica Parker as the incomparable, fashionista Carrie Bradshaw. There are plenty of ups and downs and not one but two weddings, and it’s racked up 2.35 million sales on disc since release. Its 2010 sequel, snappily titled Sex and the City 2, is 12th bestseller with 1.25 million DVD and Blu-ray sold.

Third place brings us to Britain’s favourite singleton and Bridget Jones’s Diary, adapted from the bestselling novel, earning an Oscar nomination for leading lady Renée Zellweger, and selling 2 million copies on disc. Its sequel The Edge of Reason is a big seller too: it’s in sixth place and has sold 1.68 million. (Both movies star Love Actually’s Hugh Grant and Colin Firth too – the ultimate romcom leading men?)

The oldest film on our countdown is 1999’s Notting Hill (13) starring Julia Roberts and… yes, Hugh Grant, on 1.17 million.

The film set the longest ago is Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (11), starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. Jane Austen’s original novel was published back in 1813, and this film version has shifted 1.34 million discs – proving that even 200-year-old Rom-Coms are still relevant today!
