Beauty pageants with scantly clad women are not the thing of 21st Century society. In Philippa Lowthorpe (Three Girls) Misbehaviour, it takes us back to the 1970’s When the most famous of all pageants…Miss World.
Pathe UK has released the film’s first UK Trailer. Taking us back to 1970 Miss World In London, the most viewed TV show of the time. The perfect place to start the revolution!
Keira Knightley stars as feminist activist Sally Alexander. Who in 1970 stormed the Miss World pageant at London’s Royal Albert Hall.Dropping flour bombs and flyers on the audience with help from her Women’s Liberation Movement. The show continued and saw Miss Grenada (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) winning the event and the first black woman to win it too.It even had Bob Hope (played by Greg Kinnear) as the show’s host.
.Many would argue the contests felt empowered, but at the same time sexism, racism was rife. Political focused films can be a bit drab and fact based. This looks to add a bit of quirky humour amongst the film’s serious message…
In 1970, the Miss World competition took place in London, hosted by US comedy legend, Bob Hope. At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers. Claiming that beauty competitions demeaned women, the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the competition. Not only that, when the show resumed, the result caused uproar: the winner was not the Swedish favourite but Miss Grenada, the first black woman to be crowned Miss World. In a matter of hours, a global audience had witnessed the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal of beauty turned on its head.
The film also stars Jessie Buckley, Greg Kinnear, Lesley Manville, Keeley Hawes, Rhys Ifans and Phyllis Logan.
Misbehaviour will arrive in UK and Irish Cinemas from 13th March 2020.
