Mel Gibson Sets The Resurrection Of The Christ At Lionsgate

The Resurrection of the Christ tells of Jesus returning

The long-awaited follow-up to The ion of the Christ – titled The Resurrection of the Christ – has a new home with Lionsgate chosen to partner on the new film, which has been in development for many years, Variety reports.

Through their Icon Productions banner, Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey have chosen the studio after working with Gibson on two other films in recent years: Oscar-nominee Hacksaw Ridge, which starred Andrew Garfield, and Flight Risk, which was released earlier this year with Mark Wahlberg starring. The studio is also the distributor for the Icon library, including The ion of the Christ.

“For many, many people across the globe, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. “Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker. My relationship with Mel and Bruce dates back 30 years, and I am thrilled to be partnering with them once again on this landmark event for audiences.”

Gibson added: “Lionsgate’s brave, innovative spirit and nimble, can-do attitude have inspired me for a long time, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect distributor for ‘The Resurrection of the Christ… I’ve enjoyed working with Adam and the team several times over recent years. I know the clever ingenuity, ion, and ambition the entire team commits to their projects and I’m confident they will bring everything they can to the release of this movie.”

Released in 2004, The ion of the Christ was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically until last year, with $370million, until  Deadpool & Wolverine overtook it. However, it was a box office sensation on its release 21 years ago, opening to $83million and taking over $ 610 million worldwide.

No release date for The Resurrection of the Christ has been set yet.
