After last week’s BAFTA nominations, today it was the turn of the Academy who announced the nominees for 94th Academy Awards. Jane Campion‘s Western drama The Power Of The Dog has emerged as the frontrunner with 12 nominations.

Dune  leads the chasing pack with 10. West Side Story and Belfast are just behind with both films receiving 7 nominations each.

But just like any nomination, regardless, how many films receive, it doesn’t mean they will be the eventual winners. This year’s nominations has it’s usual expected  nominees, this years has a lot of shocks, surprises too.  We also know that what the critics love and didn’t enjoy isn’t always the same films the viewing public enjoyed or didn’t .  Whilst many may say the Oscars are very different or even a ‘new normal’, we should never expect anyone has an universal right to anything.

I cannot comment some of the films as I haven’t seen some of the films like Nightmare Alley which I did enjoy, critically it garnered an mixed response.

Should Kenneth Branagh‘s Belfast received more nominations">Pig? How about world cinema films in the main Best Picture category? This surprised many , however no one expected Parasite to sweep the awards a few years ago.

I could go on forever on the snubs and surprises, Jane Campion who became the first woman to win best director with The Piano, near 30  years ago, won’t always be popular peoples choices. Arthouse cinema isn’t for everyone, however big thumbs up for The Academy for giving the smaller unexpected films a chance.
