Earlier this year, Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya‘s dystopian thriller The Kitchen made it’s world premiere closing this year’s BFI London Film Festival. Next month the film will be debuting in UK cinemas then on Netflix, today we get a glimpse at the Official Trailer. Teasing a chaotic world which the odds are stacked against those on the wrong side of the fence.

We forget British actor Kayluuya is still young (34) and now he’s making his directorial  feature debut. He’s also the brains behind The Kitchen, writing the script and going by the reaction at London, we have a lot to look forward too.

This is a film about community, inequality, family, class, joy, resilience, courage, defiance, and care in Orwellian London, and communities around the globe. Kane Robinson stars as an now reclusive ex-con Izi trying to find his way out of hell. Just as that exit door slowly opens he crosses paths with Benji (Jedaiah Bannermann) they both team up in the name of survival.

In a dystopian London, the gap between rich and poor has been stretched to its limits. All forms of social housing have been eradicated and only The Kitchen remains. A community that refuses to move out of the place they call home. This is where we meet a solitary Izi, living here by necessity and desperately trying to find a way out, and a 12-year-old Benji, who has lost his mother and is searching for a family. We follow our unlikely pair as they struggle to forge a relationship in a system that is stacked against them.

The cast also includes Hope Ikpoku Jr, Ian Wright, BackRoad Gee, Cristale, Teija Kabs, and Demmy Ladipo. The Kitchen will be released in select UK cinemas from 12th January. Then on Netflix globally from 19th January.
