Nearly four years after it started principal photography, Taika Waititi‘s Next Goal Wins is close to release. Searchlight Pictures today have released the film’s first trailer to spread some feel good spirit amongst us.
Michael Fassbender stars as the coach given the unlikely task the worst football (Soccer in U.S) team around for the world cup. However this is no ordinary team, this is the American Samoa national team the worst FIFA ranked team. Who also recorded the worst defeat in the games history, a 31-0 defeat from Australia in 2001.
The story was first documented in the 2014 film of the same name which followed the actual events. It was a fantastic film and the idea to dramatize the story has been around since that film. This will play like a underdog story that will hope to bring a smile to anyone watching it. You get a good sense of the story, the tone and we hope the long wait will be worth it!
Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), NEXT GOAL WINS follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.
The film also stars Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio, Taika Waititi, Will Arnett, Rhys Darby. Next Goal Wins is set for a UK and Irish cinemas later this year, with 17th November set for U.S release.
