Sunday Short Theatre – Doughnut (2021)

Doughnut (2021)

Have you ever done group activities in specific groups or even at work? We all have, things go two ways for the good or downhill drastically when icebreakers kick-off things. In this week’s Sunday Short Theatre, Doughnut things get cantankerous all thanks to a misjudged.

The British short film comes Manchester based filmmakers Larry Ketang and Liam White. For this film we find ourselves in the middle of an amateur improv group meet. Meeting for the first time however things turn sour
when one of the group misjudges the situation.

This dark comedy packs a lot into its 14 minute running time. It’s the old chestnut you think you know them, in reality you don’t. This is all about the power of words and how we perceive people which could mould how we think. In this film’s case, everyone on edge and what has been said or done is forgivable.

Here’s the director’s statement: “DOUGHNUT is a darkly comedic short about the power of words, about how the image others have of you is shaped so much by what you say and how this can be manipulated if you really wanted to. It also asks questions about the nature of atonement, and whether some acts are unforgivable, regardless of how much time has ed.

As with all our films, we want it to be entertaining on first watch, but with enough questions and layers that you want to discuss with fellow viewers afterwards what you would have done in the same situation, and watch it again“.

It’s a film that has many layers, a shape shifting tone that will leave you with a different view every time you watch it.

An amateur improv. class gather for the first time. During a friendly ice-breaker, one of the does something that the rest of the group struggle to move beyond.

The film stars Nadia Emam, Lee Fenwick, and Corin Silva.
