Sinners Breaks Box Office Records For Astounding 2nd Weekend In The US

Despite being rivalled at the box office by two big new releases and the continued dominance of A Minecraft Movie, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners defied all box office expectations on its second weekend, and broke records in the process.
After its $48million debut last weekend, the Michael B. Jordan starter showcased astonishing legs for its second weekend, dropping just 6% from before and grossing $45million. The film is now the second-highest second weekend for an R-rated horror film after It ($60.1M) and holds the third-best second frame for Coogler after the Black Panther movies. It is also the best “hold” for a second weekend outside of the Christmas corridor and equaled the smallest second-weekend box office drop in any genre since Avatar.
Internationally, Sinners has grossed $39.1 million, pushing its worldwide total to $161.6 million. It had an opening of $48 million in 3,308 theaters and has expanded to 3,347 theaters as of its second weekend. (via Box Office Mojo).
Opening this weekend, too, was the 20th anniversary release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which grossed $25.2million and Ben Affleck-starring sequel, The ant 2, which grossed $24.4million, almost on par with the original’s opening back in 2016.
