If you were to stereotype Scarlett Johansson solely by her title of “sexiest woman alive”—one that she has won twice from Esquire Magazine—you would be seriously underestimating her. Over the course of the last decade, Johansson has developed one of the most impressive resumes of any actor, navigating both the studio blockbuster game and independent film genre to near perfection. Her performances range from Jersey Shore JAP (Jewish American Princess), to magician’s assistant, and even superhero heartthrob. To top it off, for her new best picture nominated film Her, she manages to steal the show without ever showing her face. To celebrate Her’s release, we are taking a look back at Johansson’s most notable performances from the past 10 years.

Lost in Translation (2003)

Rather than basking in the critical acclaim she received from 2003’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Scarlett Johansson returned to work and helped transcend Lost in Translation into a classic. In the film, Johansson plays a married woman still searching for her purpose in life. When she meets Bob Harris (Bill Murray), their unlikely connection sets into motion a comedic take on the melancholy nature of life. Propelled by the help of her co-star, Johansson achieved pathos that is often sought after, but rarely attained in American cinema. For this, Johansson won the BAFTA for best actress in a leading role, and was also nominated for a golden globe in the same category.

Match Point (2005)

Morphing from her role of quasi-mistress in Lost in Translation, Johansson took on the femme-fatal character Nola Rice in Match Point. As Nola, Johansson leads Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) down a path of adultry, ultimately leading to a shocking conclusion. Her performance moved critics once again, with Globe and Mail’s Liam Lacey proclaiming that “Johansson… gives (Allen’s) film a quality that his recent work has often lacked, the recognizable flutter of a heart beat behind the facade of the character.” And for this heart fluttering performance, she was nominated for a Golden Globe, this time for best ing actress.

The Prestige (2006)

As a magicians assitant in The Prestige, Johansson put on a dazziling side performance worthy of a headlining act.. Working as Robert Angier’s (Hugh Jackman) assistant, Johansson is quickly caught in the middle of a deadly fued between the former and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale). After being constantly forced to do Angier’s bidding, Johansson decides to leave. When she does, she pulls off her own sleight of hand, proving that she is not only a heavyweight actor, but a mystifying magician as well.

The Avengers (2012)

Reviving her role as black widow from Iron Man 2, Johansson returned to fight off an alien army in 2012’s The Avengers. As black widow, Johansson had fan boys everywhere cheering in their marvel themed underpants. With her help alongside the rest of the ensemble cast, The Avengers not only received high critical praise—it garnered a 92% rating on rotten tomatoes—but also raked in the largest box office opening for a film ever.

Don Jon (2013)

Returning to her New York roots, Johansson continued to develop her dramatic range in this past fall’s Don Jon. In this film written and directed by Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Johansson plays Barbara—a beautiful New Jersey girl with a keen eye set on Levitt. Johansson once again received almost universal critical appraise, with New York magazine’s David Edelstein complementing her performance as “dizzyingly fast: She detonates every Jersey diphthong. Her gum-cracking Barbara is gorgeous and terrifying.”

Her (2014)

This winter, Scar-Jo adds another spectacular performance to her resume. As the voice of Samantha, an operating system designed to meet Theodore’s (Joaquin Phoenix) every need, Johansson helps push the boundaries of relationships as we know them. Piggy-backing off the magic of Johansson and Phoenix’s on-screen relationship, Her is a forerunner for best picture, and has been nominated for four other Oscars as well.

HER IS RELEASED IN UK CINEMAS ON 14 FEBRUARY 2014
