After tackling vampires in Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers is pivoting to werewolves for his next project.

As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Eggers is reteaming with Focus Features for Werwulf, which will see the filmmaker also reunite with Sjón, his co-writer for Viking revenge saga The Northman.

The article reports that details on the film’s story are scarce but that the film is set in 13th-century England and that the script is also reported to have “dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English”.  These reports are in line with the style audiences have come to know Eggers for, meticulously researched and detailed period pieces with a dark twist.

Werwulf is set to be released on Christmas Day 2026 in North America. As of writing no international release date has been confirmed. Focus Features is no doubt hoping to replicate Nosferatu’s success, as the film was a surprise Christmas hit with its $40 million five-day opening being nearly double industry expectations.

According to Box Office Mojo, Nosferatu has already grossed over $156 million worldwide, making it Eggers’ highest-grossing movie to date. Nosferatu was also a critically acclaimed hit, and is currently up for five BAFTAs; Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Hair & Make-Up, Original Score and Production Design.

At the time of writing no cast has been announced, although based on Egger’s previous works Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe are a strong bet, and no filming date has been set.

Werwulf will release Christmas 2026.
