Yesterday was a good day for Terrence Malick fans. Morning saw the announcement that his new film, Knight of Cups, would have it’s world premiere as part of the competition at the 65th Berlin Film Festival, and later in the day, a ripple of excitement spread over the internet as the new trailer for said film was released.

Malick was previously known for his infrequent yet brilliant output, directing only four feature-length films between the years 1973 and 2005.  However, since the release of To The Wonder in 2012, and including Knight of Cups, has another three projects in post-production that are set for release over the next two years.

The plot for Knight of Cups is being kept very secretive at the moment, with not much known about the film apart this very Malick-y offical synopsis – “Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.

The trailer however, suggests an exploration of the excessive world of showbiz, with Christian Bale’s character searching for meaning in a life full of temptation and endless parties. Also starring are Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Teresa Palmer and Antonio Banderas, as well as many other familiar faces.

With such a talented cast, Malick will be hoping he can win another Golden Bear at Berlin, after his success in 1999 with The Thin Red Line.
