Netflix’s The Two Popes New Trailer Examines Their Freindship

After making it’s European Premiere at BFI London Film Festival, The Two Popes is only a few weeks away from it’s cinematic release. Today Netflix have released another New Trailer which examines the friendship between the two men. The promo also depicts the tensions within the Catholic church as the incoming Pope and out going pope have different views on the churches direction.

Anthony Hopkins,Jonathan Pryce play the pontiff’s in question, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. Both men were each others fiercest critics but come to together in faith and God.

Whilst the film does have a dramatic streak, there does seem to be a lot of charm. Not forgetting a big slice of humour in an era in which the Catholic church has a lot of negativity. A compelling feel nonetheless and stay tuned for our review…

From Fernando Meirelles, the Academy Award-nominated director of “City of God,” and three-time Academy Award nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten, comes an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years. Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.

The film also stars Juan Minujín, Sidney Cole, and Thomas D Williams.

The Two Popes will be shown in select cinemas on November 27 in the US, November 29 in the UK and on Netflix December 20.
