Nathan Fillion Says Playing Green Lantern Is Freeing

Nathan Fillion has described playing Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman as “freeing”.
Fillion, who took on the role of the Green Lantern, has collaborated with Gunn many times before, on films such as Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy, Super and The Suicide Squad. This July will be the first time he portrays Gardner on screen after voicing another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, in multiple animated films and series.
The actor told TV Guide: “What’s important to know is, you don’t have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good.
“He’s not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that’s the answer. That’s what you do in that moment.”
He added: “I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman. He can’t!”
Describing the character as “a jerk”, it seems Fillion’s character is written as he was in the comics.
The film stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult picks up the mantle of the villainous Lex Luthor. Fillion, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo and more co-star in the ensemble, with Milly Alcock (Game of Thrones) set to make her debut as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl before he solo film releases in 2026.
Superman releases in cinemas on July 11th.
