Like Tears In Rain Review

Rutger Hauer in Like Tears In Rain

Like Tears In Rain is mostly a loving personal tribute to late, great monstrous pride of the Netherlands talent, Rutger Hauer, through the annals of personal records and archived footage prominently taken by the man himself, who apparently went everywhere with camera in hand.

The beautiful looking gentleman was a well loved and a brilliant actor who seemed to make an impression on all who crossed his path including long time friends he regularly visited even when his stardom rose.

Although this documentary is titled as a reference to one of his most golden film roles as Roy Batty, in Blade Runner (1981) there’s not a lot of information or behind the scenes vision. In fact, the movies in general he appeared in besides Nighthawks (1981), Flesh + Blood (1985) and a few of his European productions it’s full of archived family fun times on show here.

There’s also a few television talk-show appearances which I found the most interesting, there’s one where he questions the host on a ridiculous, basically unanswerable question about his looks / talent, whilst good friend Whoopie Goldberg shares a moment on her now defunct, hourly variety show.

Later career highlights such as, Hobo with a Shotgun (2011) is showcased with its director rightfully gushing over his lead. Also Robert Rodriguez and Mickey Rourke discuss Rutger, as a person and working with him in Sin City (2005).

Nothing much in this documentary put together by his goddaughter is anything new on the cinematic front, although his family life and attachments to friends or certain colleagues is an extraordinary, quaint side of him I didn’t know.

Like Tears In Rain is definitely worth a look if you’re a fan of a unique, formidable actor not forgotten.
