Kitao Sakurai To Direct New Street Fighter Movie

In a report from Deadline, it has been announced that Legendary’s live-action movie adaptation of the Capcom video game series Street Fighter, has found a new director in Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip),
The film was originally planned to have Talk To Me directors Danny & Michael Philippou at the helm after they attached themselves to the project in April 2023, following the Legendary’s acquisition of exclusive film and TV rights to the Street Fighter property.
While the plot of the film are still under wraps for now, the games, which first release back in 1987, often centre around a global fighting tournament where an eclectic cast of fighters battle in one-on-one brawls. These usually come to a head in a final fight with the evil M. Bison, the leader of the organisation Shadaloo.
Since its launch, Street Fighter has sold over 55 million units worldwide. The series was previously brought to the big screen in 1994 with a movie that starred the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia and Kylie Minogue as well as an animated straight-to-video movie that acted as a direct sequel to the games.
Sakurai has previously received an Emmy nomination for his work on The Eric Andre Show, which he directed and executive produced. He is best known for co-writing and directing the hidden camera Netflix comedy Bad Trip as well as directing various shows such as Twisted Metal, Dave and The Premise.
He is currently directing several episodes of Amazon’s spy thriller Butterfly, starring Daniel Dae Kim, and is executive producer on the second season of Netflix and A24’s Beef.
