Judi Dench Is Red Joan Watch UK Trailer

They always say your past will come back to haunt you, In Red Joan it does for Judi Dench.

Based on Jennie Rooney’s best-selling novel ‘Red Joan’ Dench plays Joan Stanley a woman living out her retirement in contention in England. Only to find the Mi5 turning up on her doorstep accusing her of been a KGB spy during the Cold War era.

The story is based on Melita Norwood, the longest serving KGB spy in the country, regarded as “the most important female agent ever recruited by the USSR.” The film will go back in time and see Joan’s younger life (played by Sophie Cookson). Seeing a young woman who falls in love with a communist League student at University to become an legendary spy.

The year is 2000 and Joan Stanley (Dench) is living in contented retirement in suburbia at the turn of the millennium. Her tranquil life is suddenly disrupted when she’s arrested by MI5 and accused of providing intelligence to Communist Russia.

Cut to 1938 where Joan is a Cambridge physics student who falls for young communist Leo Galich and through him, begins to see the world in a new light.

Working at a top-secret nuclear research facility during WWII, Joan comes to the realisation that the world is on the brink of mutually assured destruction. Confronted with an impossible question – what price would you pay for peace? – Joan must choose between betraying her country and loved ones or saving them.

The film will also stars Stephen Campbell Moore (The Child in Time, Goodbye Christopher Robin) as Max, a physics professor and Young Joan’s mentor, Tom Hughes (Victoria, London Town) as Leo, a young communist and Young Joan’s first love, Ben Miles (The Crown, Woman in Gold) as Joan’s son and lawyer Nick and Tereza Srbova.

Next week The Glasgow Film Festival will announce its 2019 Programme, could this be part of that line up?

If not, Red Joan will arrive in the UK and Ireland cinemas from 19th April.
