Jordan Peele To Produce The People Under The Stairs Remake?

Remakes are ten a penny these, it’s when those remakes are for much loved films, its a tipping point for many fans. Jordan Peele the comedian turned filmmaker who brought us Get Out and Us is about to produce a remake of a Wes Craven cult classic…The People Under The Stairs.
As we already know Peele for now is putting his energies into producing with another remake, Candyman set for a release next summer. He’s also providing opportunities to up and coming filmmakers and this latest project will do with another first/second time director. Collider broke the news he’ll produce with alongside Win Rosenfeld via their Monkeypaw Productions banner. Possibly both or either may also write the script as both wrote the Candyman reboot script.
The original film was released in 1991 and was based around a young boy called fool who breaks into a house with two thieves. The house is owned by The Robesons, (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) whom he discovers their home is a living hell especially for their daughter. But deep down under the stairs the psychotic couple keep others ‘imprisoned’.
The film came with a big social commentary with many reviews comparing the Robesons as Ronald and Nancy Regan. Jordan Peele loves his social commentary and we expect this new version will tackle a very contemporary social issue with satire.
Before Wes Craven died he was in the process in developing an People Under The Stairs . Craven died in 2015 and a few months later the TV series of Scream was released, he described as “a contemporary Downton Abbey meets Amityville Horror. The protagonist this time was to be an young girl who goes missing at the grand Robeson Family Manor, facing centuries old horrors ”
As I said at the beginning fans of Wes Craven will be upset there’s going to be a remake. At first I can see why , but if you look at the film it had plenty of scope for improvement. Especially in it’s execution and it was an idea that deserved better.
