Interview: Munroe Bergdorf on Intimacy and Vulnerability in her Documentary Feature, Love & Rage

Activist and model Munroe Bergdorf has been through ups and downs over the past few years, all of which are captured in director Olivia Cappuccini’s feature documentary Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf.
Our writer Lucy Carter was lucky enough to chat with Munroe about what it was like to recreate her past on screen, the vulnerability of putting her real life on show, and how the documentary captures her real-time reactions to personal and public tragedies. They also talk about making the documentary, getting it out into the public domain (as well as this month’s SXSW London Film Festival) and more.
Love & Rage tells the intimate and unflinching story of Bergdorf—author, model, leading trans activist, global pioneer of LGBTQ+ equity, and creative force. As an international trailblazer in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, Munroe faces fierce discrimination while living and embracing her truth. This powerful documentary not only tells Munroe’s personal story but also serves as a call to action, sparking a universal conversation of hope and inspiration.
In this intimate documentary, director Olivia Cappuccini chronicles the life of one of our great modern British icons: activist, writer, model, and influencer Munroe Bergdorf. Seesawing between bold, dreamlike reconstructions of Bergdorf’s childhood and honest testimonials on her experience being swept under the relentless scrutiny of the UK media, Love & Rage sensitively employs the vulnerability of Bergdorf’s personal life and experiences to investigate ever-vital systemic issues of transphobia, homophobia, and racism, all while reiterating the importance of community and painting a portrayal of what modern activism looks like. It is an inspiring insight into the resilience required of a trailblazer.
Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf is in UK cinemas on June 10th & 11th.
