Film Review – The Addams Family (2019)

Review

This film had mixed reactions in my house. I felt it was rather bland. I wanted to love this film, who doesn’t love the Addams family? Gomez and Morticia are so in love and have that love that every couple want, all be it bloodthirst and kooky. I didn’t get that vibe from this new animated version.

The family live hidden away from the world thanks to the fog, but when houses are built on nearby land, the house becomes exposed and the film takes some bizarre turn where the Addams buy up the lots as obviously the locals don’t want them there and move their entire family in.

That is the subplot. The story follows Wednesday, who becomes a complete rebel and puts pink bows in her hair and I’m sure she’s wearing a dress at one point. I’m not convinced Wednesday Addams would rebel like that. She’s more likely to succeed in cutting her brother’s head off or killing the neighbours then wear a dress!

That being said when I asked my husband, who is a full-grown adult and somewhat of a movie buff if he enjoyed the film, he said: “Really enjoyed it, good film”. I was sure he was going to say no! My eight-year-old son said: “I want to watch it again”. So he clearly liked it!

I’m going to put this film down as Marmite. I think you’ll love it and watch it again, or you’ll have too fonder memories of Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia and dislike it.

The film is on digital from 17th February & Blu-ray and DVD from 2nd March 2020.
