Film Review – Elemental (2023)

Elemental coming to UK and Irish cinemas from 7th July from Disney-Pixar

One of the standout aspects of Elemental is the exceptional voice performances from the cast, particularly Leah Lewis as Ember and Mamoudou Athie as Wade. Lewis brings incredible energy and determination to her role, perfectly capturing Ember’s fiery personality. Athie, on the other hand, injects warmth and humor into Wade’s character, effortlessly portraying his laid-back demeanour. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, enhancing the emotional depth of their journey. Visually, Elemental is a feast for the eyes, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail that has become synonymous with Pixar animations. The vibrant colours, fluid animation, and breath taking landscapes are a testament to the studio’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. The film’s aesthetic is a seamless blend of fantastical elements and real-world inspirations, immersing the audience in a truly mesmerizing experience.

However, despite its technical prowess, Elemental falls short in of its story. It treads familiar ground and lacks the innovative and emotionally resonant narratives that have defined many Disney and Pixar classics. While the friendship between Ember and Wade forms the core of the film, their journey feels predictable and fails to elicit the same level of emotional investment as previous works from the studios. It’s unfortunate that Elemental doesn’t leave a lasting impression on the viewer’s heart. Furthermore, Elemental highlights the shift in tone and storytelling that has occurred in recent Disney and Pixar films. Gone are the days of the old-school Pixar, known for its ability to effortlessly tug at the heartstrings of audiences across generations. Instead, the film feels geared towards a different generation, perhaps a younger and less nostalgic audience. While this shift may appeal to some viewers, it leaves long-time fans yearning for the poignant and thought-provoking storytelling that the studios were once renowned for.

Elemental is a visually stunning film with exceptional vocal performances that bring the characters to life. The animation is a testament to the talent and dedication of the creative team behind it, captivating audiences with its beauty. However, the film falls short in of its generic story and its inability to evoke the same emotional resonance as its predecessors. It is a reminder that the Disney and Pixar of old, with their timeless and universal stories, maybe a thing of the past. While Elemental may cater to a different generation, it leaves fans longing for the enchantment and emotional depth that once defined these iconic studios.
