Board of Monopoly? Which Games would make the best Movies?

If you take a quick look at contemporary pop culture, you will see that many of the traditional barriers have been broken down in the last decade. From singers attempting to thrive in Hollywood to iconic Marvel comic book characters appearing in console and slot games, the transition from one medium to another seems easier than ever before.Despite this, the concept of games becoming the premise for hit films still seems fanciful. As the failure of the disappointing Battleship can testify, it is extremely difficult to replicate gaming patterns in a traditional film format, but this will not stop others from trying. Neither has it prevented us from concocting our own list of potential favourites, including the following: –

Monopoly
Let’s start here, as it was recently confirmed that writer Andrew Niccol was writing the screenplay for a Monopoly film based on the U.S. version of the hit board game. While the details are sketchy and the initial press blurb stockpiled with clichés, there appears little doubt that Lionsgate and Hasbro are ing forces to produce and release the film. Apparently based on the story of a boy from Baltic Avenue who makes his own fortune, we can only imagine what the movie will look like and it will surely be worth a viewing when it reaches the UK!

Farmsville
Now this may be a little tongue-in-cheek, but Facebook’ social game Farmville is one of the most popular titles of the modern age. Played by millions around the world, the game would surely attract a large viewing audience if it was ever repackaged and portrayed on the silver screen. Imagine a screenplay where people help out on each other’s farms, share produce and collaborate to build a better world, and you are presented with arguably the greatest feel-good story of all time. Of course this would also be the dullest movie in history, but fans of the game would scarcely notice given their love of all things Facebook.

Live Roulette
While many films have featured gambling and iconic experiences such as roulette, few have incorporated these as central themes. Now that online casino are hosting live roulette tournaments and capturing the thrill of real-time gameplay, however, now is surely the ideal time to create a feature film based on the raw emotions of a player as he proceeds towards a huge jackpot. This is certainly something that we would watch, so we imagine others would too.
