Ben Wheatley’s Bulk Set To Premiere At Edinburgh Film Festival
Meg 2 director’s new ‘secret’ film set to make it’s World Premiere and open the Festival’s Midnight Madness strand
We’re a few months away from this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. Today the festival announced the world premiere of BULK , Ben Wheatley’s new film which is set to be the opening night film of the Festival’s Midnight Madness strand.
After a streak in mainstream cinema (Meg 2) and Streaming world (Rebecca), BULK marking a return to Wheatley‘s kaleidoscopic surreal worlds similar to In The Earth and A Field in England. Not much is known on what the film is about, apart from it will be produced by Andy Starke of Rook Films.Financed by Film4 Ollie Madden and David Kimbangi with executive producers also for Film4.
BULK will be part of the festival’s Midnight Madness strand which runs throughout the Festival and unleashes the very best in new genre cinema from around the world. Alien: Romulus and The Substance where part of the festival’s Strand last year.
Ben Wheatley said “I’m very excited and proud to be premiering BULK at Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness. This is a midnight film through and through. Car chases, gun fights, sci-fi and romance. Thanks to Edinburgh for having us. It’s going to be a wild night.”
Paul Ridd, The Festival’s CEO and Festival Director has said “I have been sworn on pain of death to not give too much away about BULK. Suffice it to say this is a truly unique film that took our breath away then fried our brains. We could not think of a better way for us to launch the second year of Midnight Madness at EIFF than with a new trip from a true visionary of cinema. It is guaranteed to bring the house down in August. Bring it on.”

The news on BULK comes days after Eva Victor‘s Sorry, Baby is set to open this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The film recently made it’s premiere at Sundance Film Festival, which will this month be screened as part of Directors Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival. Sorry, Baby stars Victor along side Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17) and Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird).
Something bad happened to Agnes (Eva Victor) but life goes on… for everyone around her, at least. When a beloved friend visits her, Agnes starts to realise just how stuck she has been, and begins to work out how to move forward.
Paul Ridd also commented on this news ‘This is a film that completely floored us. Its witty and moving script and formal confidence is married to heartbreaking performances from a wonderful cast, and it signals Eva Victor as a major talent on screen and behind the camera. The film’s fierce, uncompromising spirit and independence perfectly aligns with EIFF, and we are honoured to open this year’s Festival with such a wonderful film.’
Sorry, Baby will be released by A24 in the US and Picturehouse Entertainment in the UK. There is no word on distribution or release info for BULK.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival will run from 14th-20th August.
