A24 Set To Remake Jean-Claude Van Damme Classic Bloodsport
A24 is reportedly set to add to its impressive roster of films – both past and present – with word that the independent studio is set to remake a classic 1980s film for a modern generation in the form of Bloodsport.
Word from TheInSnider (via Dark Horizons) is that the cult classic Bloodsport is set for the remake/reimagining treatment. Released at the end of the 1980s, after the martial arts craze had hit Hollywood throughout the decade, the film was the breakthrough film for star Jean-Claude Van Damme and became a huge success, grossing over $50million worldwide from its minuscule $ 2 million budget. Made by The Cannon Group, while it was a huge success for them, it couldn’t save the studio from bankruptcy in the years later.
The movie had Van Damme playing Frank Dux, an army captain and ninjutsu practitioner who competes in an underground full- martial arts tournament called the Kumite in Hong Kong. Future Oscar Winner Forest Whitaker, Leah Ayres, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, and Bolo Yeung co-starred. The film was marketed as a true story based on the real Dux, who served as the action choreographer and technical advisor, but many of the man’s claims were subsequently disputed.
Phil Noyce (Salt, Dead Calm) and James McTeigue (V For Vendetta) had tried to get remakes off the ground in previous years but to no avail. We wait to see if this one comes to fruition.
