2020 Edinburgh Film Festival Will Have A āBig Scoreā Retrospective

The oldest film international film festival Edinburgh will be making a ābig noiseā in 2020. Today Edinburgh Film Festival (EIFF) unveiled its 2020 retrospective programme, The Big Score an exploration of innovation in film score, to screen as part of the 74th programme next June.
As any cinephile knows the integral part a score is to a film. The Big Score will celebrate that importance will feature work from some of the finest composers and directors in the world. Including an in-depth focus on score pioneers Mica Levi and Delia Derbyshire, a dynamic tribute to the great Ennio Morricone and an atmospheric journey through some of the greatest jazz cinema ever made.
The festivalās senior programmer and The Big Score programme curator, Niall Greig Fulton commented on Jackie (2016), saw her nominated for Best Original Score at the 89th Academy Awards.
Singer, songwriter, composer and producer, the multi-talented Levi, (sometimes known by her stage name Micachu), is also famous for her experimental pop band, Good Sad Happy Bad, (formerly Micachu and the Shapes), with whom she has performed extensively.
Her films include Michael Almereydaās Marjorie Prime (2017), Pablo LarraĆnās Jackie (2016) , Jonathan Glazerās Glasgow-set Under the Skin (2013), Alejandro Landesā Monos (2019).
Delia Derbyshire may not be a familiar name , but once you mention Doctor Who, pardon the punt you know WHO she is. Famous for her pivotal electronic arrangement on the theme from Doctor Who. Her trailblazing work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the 1960s has influenced countless artists including Aphex Twin and The Chemical Brothers. This strand explores her life and art with an exciting programme of cult classics, experimental work, and documentaries.
Her films include Tony Richardsonās Hamlet (1969), Joseph Despinsā and William Dumaresqās Duffer (1972) and Alan Gibsonās Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972). In addition to this, there will be two programmes of shorts featuring documentaries and a selection of rarely seen experimental films scored by Derbyshire.

Although best known for his ground-breaking work with director Sergio Leone, this look at Ennio Morriconeās incredible career focuses on his many other superb artistic collaborations, exploring his extraordinary versatility and celebrating his breath-taking canon of work. Spanning decades, this collection of films blends cult cinema and classics and features work from a dazzling array of world-famous directors.

This exciting selection of films takes us from his ground-breaking work on cult spaghetti westerns and giallo thrillers in the 60s and 70s through to his Oscar-nominated scores for classics such as Days of Heaven, The Mission and The Untouchables in the 80s.ā
His Films include a 4K restoration of Gillo Pontecorvoās The Battle of Algiers (1966), Mario Bavaās Danger Diabolik (1968), Sergio Corbucciās The Great Silence (1968), Dario Argentoās The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1970), Terence Malikās Days of Heaven (1978), John Carpenterās The Thing (1982), Roland Joffeās The Mission (1986), Brian De Palmaās The Untouchables (1987) and a 4K restoration of Giuseppe Tornatoreās Cinema Paradiso (1988).
With timeless scores from extraordinary musicians such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Henry Mancini, Duke Ellington, Lalo Schifrin, Bernard Herrmann and Quincy Jones, this rich strand investigates the eternal love affair between jazz and cinema and features celebrated masterpieces by key directors such as Orson Welles, Shirley Clarke and Martin Scorsese.
Films include Louis Malleās Lift to the Scaffold (1958), Orson Wellesās Touch of Evil (1958), Otto Premingerās Anatomy of a Murder (1959), a restored 35mm print of Shirley Clarkeās The Cool World (1963), preserved by the Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center from original camera negatives in the Zipporah Films Collection, Gilles Groulxās Le chat dans le sac (1964), Richard Brooksā In Cold Blood (1967), Norman Jewisonās The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yatesā Bullitt (1968) and Martin Scorseseās Taxi Driver (1986).

As a precursor to The Big Score, EIFF and Filmhouse will present Countdown to The Big Score, a special retrospective screening once a month, running from January through to June. The full programme for Countdown to The Big Score will be released in December.
Tickets for The Big Score will go on sale alongside the full EIFF programme on Wednesday 27 May for Filmhouse and EIFF Friends with general sale commencing on Friday 29 May.
The 74th edition of Edinburgh Film Festival (EIFF) runs from 17 ā 28 June 2020.
