Awards season is here yet again, and following yesterday’s announcement for the Screen Actor’s Guild nominations, the Golden Globes have today been announced.  Seen by many as a precursor to the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes are a pretty big deal, with one difference: their film categories are split between comedy and drama.

Birdman has received the most nominations this year, with a total of seven, with Boyhood and The Imitation Game not far behind with five apiece.  It is perhaps the fact that Birdman has been classed as a comedy that it is leading the way in nominations, given that the Drama category is always a tightly fought race.  Either way, it certainly will be interesting to see how Birdman fairs come 15th January when the Academy Award nominations are announced.

There were also some surprises, with Jennifer Aniston receiving a Best Actress nomination for her role in drama Cake, and the critically acclaimed Inherent Vice only receiving one nomination, with Joaquin Phoenix being nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy.  There was also speculation that Timothy Spall may receive a nomination for his role in Mr Turner, but sadly the film didn’t receive any nominations at all.

Actress Julianne Moore showed her versatility by managing to be nominated as Best Actress in both categories, picking up nods for her portrayal as a professor with Alzheimer’s in Still Alice, and her work in David Cronenberg’s Hollywood satire, Maps To The Stars.

Martin Luther King drama Selma took away four nominations, including Ava Duvernay for Best Director, which makes her the first black woman to be nominated for the award.

The television nominations were also announced today, seeing the excellent Fargo take away five nominations, and four going to True Detective, two of the most popular new shows of the year.

Netflix continued to show its power, with House of Cards and Orange is The New Black both receiving three nominations.  Amazon instant video also had a moment in the spotlight, with its pioneering series Transparent, starring Jeffrey Tambor as a transgender woman approaching middle age, picking up nominations for Best Actor and Best Series, Comedy, or Musical.

You can see how your favourites got on below, in the full list of nominations.  The 72nd Golden Globe Awards will be held on 11th January, with the returning Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting.
